Only in New Zealand

We were waiting, seated, ready to go, tray tables stowed and seat backs in the upright position on Air New Zealand flight NZ 8577 a Dehavilland Dash 8 Turbo Prop service from Tauranga to Wellington.

Nothing happened.  The door remained open, the flight attendant remained in place at the top of the stairs.  The time for departure passed.

Then the announcement.  This is your captain speaking.  We have an unusual circumstance here in the cockpit.  A departing passenger from the previous flight has left with the briefcase of the first officer. In that briefcase are several documents including the flight plan without which we are unable to take off.  I understand the passenger has been contacted on the way home and is now returning to the airport to swap briefcases with the first officer.

The plane took off 15 minutes later. So many questions unanswered!

Only in New Zealand.
